FLA CONFERENCE

You are cordially invited to attend a 1.5 day event on the Fundamentals of Language Assessment. This event, sponsored in part by a TOEFL Board Grant and hosted by Instituto Especializado de Nivel Superior Centro Cultural Salvadoreño Americano will feature internationally-renowned experts in the field of foreign/second language education and assessment.

FACILITATORS

DR. CHRISTINE COOMBE

christineCoombeChristine Coombe has a PhD in Foreign/Second Language Education from The Ohio State University. She is currently on the English faculty of Dubai Men's College and works as an Assessment Leader for the Higher Colleges of Technology. She is the former Testing and Measurements Supervisor at UAE University and Assessment Coordinator of Zayed University. Christine is co-editor of the Assessment Practices volume in the TESOL Case Studies series; co-author of A Practical Guide to Assessing English Language Learners (2007, University of Michigan Press); co-editor of Evaluating Teacher Effectiveness in EF/SL Contexts (2007, University of Michigan Press); co-editor of Language Teacher Research in the Middle East (2007, TESOL Publications) and Leadership in English Language Teaching and Learning (2008, University of Michigan Press). Christine’s forthcoming books are on task-based learning and reigniting, retooling and retiring in English language teaching.

During her tenure in the Middle East, she has won many awards including: two-time recipient of the International Language Testing Association (ILTA) grant for the promotion of professionalism in the area of language testing; the 2002 Spaan Fellowship for Research in Second/Foreign Language Assessment; the 2002-03 TOEFL Outstanding Young Scholar Award; the TOEFL Board Grant for 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2007-08 for her work in delivering training in assessment to teachers in the Arabian Gulf and in developing countries. Most recently she served on the TESOL Board of Directors as Director Serving as Convention Chair for Tampa 2006 and was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Teacher of the Year for 2003-04. She is currently TESOL President-elect (2010-2013)

 

DR. NEIL ANDERSON

neilandersonNeil J Anderson is a Professor of Linguistics and English Language and Coordinator of the English Language Center at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, USA. Professor Anderson has taught and presented papers and workshops in over 30 countries. His research interests include second language reading, language learner strategies, learner self-assessment, motivation in language teaching and learning, and ELT leadership development. Professor Anderson is the author or co-editor of three teacher education texts in the area of second language reading: Exploring Second Language Reading: Issues and Strategies (1999, Heinle/Thomson), Practical English Language Teaching: Reading (2008, McGraw Hill) and L2 reading research and instruction: Crossing the boundaries (2009, The University of Michigan Press). He is the co-editor with Christine Coombe, Lauren Stephenson, and Mary Lou McCloskey of Leadership in English language teaching and learning (2008, The University of Michigan Press). In addition he is the author of an EFL reading series ACTIVE Skills for Reading (2002/2003 Heinle/Thomson). Professor Anderson served as President of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. from 2001-2002. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of The International Research Foundation (TIRF) from 2002-2008, serving as the President of the Board from 2004-2006. He has been a Fulbright Teaching and Research Scholar in Costa Rica (2002-2003) and in Guatemala (2009-2010).

 

NANCY HUBLEY

Nancy Hubley is an assessment specialist in ELT (English Language Teaching) and an anthropologist. Nancy co-founded CTELT, the Current Trends in English Language Testing conference with Christine Coombe, and co-authored A Practical Guide to Assessing English Language Learners, published in March 2007 by University of Michigan Press. In the UAE, Nancy worked with UAE University, Zayed University and Higher Colleges of Technology where she was honored with the Teacher of the Year award.

 

In recent years, Nancy has worked on the interface between curriculum design, materials production and assessment. She has worked on curriculum reform in many countries, including Russia, Oman, Kuwait, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan. She is based in the New Hampshire, USA, where she writes teacher’s manuals and Web resources for a major ELT textbook publisher.
